Promoting behaviors can be effective for depression

Summary:

Often, moving on with life brings challenges and stress. And depression may even make things worse than they actually are because of inactivity. New research suggests that the right kind of training, encouragement, and education can be effective treatments for depression.

People with depression may find that even the smallest task is a big barrier that prevents them from doing the things they should or should not do about it. Often, moving on with life brings challenges and stress. Most people experience a transition period during the transition from college to high school to college, or from one job to another.

But depression can make these conditions worse. This does not mean that they are stronger than anyone else. It is their lack of confidence or their ability to fabricate wrong ideas that blind them to the realities of life. However, the results of a new study suggest that the right kind of training, encouragement, and education can be an effective treatment for depression.

Recently, a team of psychologists from the University of Washington compared four types of treatment for depression: behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, antidepressants and placebo.

About 250 people with severe depression were assigned to one of 4 treatments. Four months later, patients in the Behavioral Activation (BA) group did at least with antidepressant recipients.

Such results are surprising. According to the guidelines, psychiatric treatment and antidepressant are the most effective treatments for depression. Either way, BA is better than antidepressants because fewer patients who have received BA discontinued than those taking the drug. Another interesting finding is that BA seems to be more effective than brain therapy when used with depressed patients. Promoting behavior is a practice that does not tell patients to do it.

Rather, it is a process that helps those who are discouraged to do what they do not want to do. Those who believe in this type of treatment believe that it works because depression causes people to leave stressful situations. In such a short time, they found relief because they let go of the pain of facing difficult problems. But they too have lost their reward.

For example, a depressed man may call a patient so that there is no conflict between him and a co-worker. However, he loses the satisfaction that can come from working and eventually making a living. Such a removal leaves the original problem unchanged. Lack of exercise only exacerbates the problem and exacerbates depression, making it harder to get up in the morning. The idea behind BA is not to embarrass or blame the person for his or her problems. Depression often forces people to forgo pleasures and deprives themselves of the satisfaction that comes from engaging in life. Since exercise can help increase enjoyment in life and reduce depression, patients learn to stick to a daily routine and gradually increase activity. Breaking the cycle, the idea of self-blame is often associated with depression is the job of therapists. They pay attention to the current time and practices that help achieve long-term goals. Developing problem-solving skills is a third part of BA.

The difference between behavioral therapy and psychiatric therapy is that the health care provider spends time examining negative and distorted perceptions, as well as self-confidence, of patients who have fallen depression. According to the psychotherapy, attitudes will change before the action. In behavioral therapy such as the BA method, the therapist tells the patient not to think too much. Simple processes like setting goals, problem solving, and getting a task at hand become the focus instead of focusing on the big picture. For years, the two methods have been closely linked through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which combines the two. Good looks and happiness do not depend on your success but on your emotions.

The answer is usually in the middle. No one wants to live his life without feeling it. Turning your mind away from thoughts and feelings that undermine your work and the thoughts that promote it may be best. BA supporters advise patients to pay attention when they are thinking of not producing results but to focus on immediate observations and the smell they are experiencing around them. The sooner you start working out, the easier and more helpful it is to examine your thoughts from a strong perspective and understand why they are bad to start with. The goal is not easy for one who is depressed.

This is why the therapist should be an encouraging mentor or trainer who reminds the patient of the good that will come from doing difficult things. Although behavioral therapy is the most effective treatment in a study at the University of Washington, it should not be considered as a substitute for CBT and antidepressants as the first recommended treatment for depression. Studies show the benefits of including a BA and a comprehensive treatment plan for depression, especially in its more severe form.

Nor is it a choice between one system over another. The combination of the method can give patients the best chance of feeling and improving.
